Learning English is essential for success at school and for further education, training and employment for students who speak a language other than English as their first language.
EAL/D education is provided at Jesmond Public School where specialist teachers deliver EAL/D education in a variety of ways to meet the diverse needs of our students at different stages of learning English. They include intensive English language support to both newly arrived and continuing EAL/D students from Kindergarten to Year 6.
EAL/D teachers work with students in withdrawal groups to improve their English language proficiency. Other programs include EAL/D teachers working within the mainstream classrooms to support students in accessing the curriculum. As a result of the increase numbers of Arabic speaking new arrivals, our school employs an SLSO Bilingual 5 days per week to help translate and interpret for our Arabic speaking community.
Our EAL/D team consists of 4 specialist teachers and a SLSO Bilingual:
Renata Ninevski
Jane Baker
Ulrika Sandberg
Rachelle Douglas.
SLSO bilingual: Abtisam Soufyae
